Floora was born when DJ Truls Puls and DJ NuTeQ played a local festival in hometown Bodø, way up north in Norway some 14 years ago. The gig was a 4 deck performance on request by Nordland Musikkfestuke.
The little town above the artic circle in the north of Norway has seen many highly skilled dj’s the last years. In this rather small city a surprisingly high number of souls were picking up on the latest hip hop. By far a strange phenomenon. The cultural vacuum provided by original channels made way for local heads to connect with the new and growing hiphop movement. Local pioneers were of course an inspiration of many young hopeful jocks including the young Truls Andersen and Øystein Bekken.
The musical concept that is Floora today was developed further when they both moved to Bergen early’99. They recorded a mixtape by using 4 decks simultaneously. This tape found it`s way to the british DJ magazine XFADE (now called iDJ). The mix won the bedroom DJ competition in may’00, although the competiton was an exclusive for british DJ`s. XFADE’s review of the tape is a total brag (see press section) and provided the breakthrough Floora needed. The duo had not actually played one single gig prior to this review.
The very essence of the Floora project lies in showing the audience certain links between whatever kinds of music. Floora work their liveshows combining all the styles of mixing that they know, progressing through a lot of cross-genres in service of making it all one massive piece of music. It is some kind of a musical and historical journey. One of the techniques they are known to use is the simple trick of putting things on top of other things. It could be described as a sort of live-remixing. As well as smooth beatmatching and beats + pieces type of mixing they have a couple of cutting edge trixteries up their trousers. Their style has often been commented as quite coldcutish with a solid dose of scratching and turntablism on top…
